TO GO TO SCHOOL:
PRIVATE AND SEMI PRIVATE SCHOOL

There are different types of school; private and
Government aides
schools. Why
aided?
In short this means that part of the teaching staff is
paid for by the State. Private schools are, like
everywhere, paid for by children’s families.
40% are Government
40% are Christian, managed by the Church.
20% are Private Hindu or Muslm.

RIGHT TO EDUCATION:
Government schools are free
There is one state-run school in nearly every borough of
medium-sized or large towns. Normally they are not well
run and tend to be attended by the poorest children.
Teachers however are well paid, which means that they are not
overly concerned by the standard of teaching. They know
they are teaching children without much of a future, so why
bother too much!
COSTS:
These vary from one school to another, from one borough to
another, from one State to another. Costs for nursery
school go from zero to 5,000.- roupies per year.

year.

degree.
Private business schools are out of the reach of the middle and
lower classes. Seats in good Schools are paying and very
few young people can attend. They therefore work in a
workshop as a laborer and they learn their trade on the job,
without really earning anything.
Correspondence courses are also available.
A secretary has to have a Business Baccalaureat.
A teacher who has completed Pre-University College can teach in
an Nursery School. To teach at primary level they have to
have a TCH or BED or DED. One in three students wants to teach.
