Of the 130 million school-age children in the world without
access to primary schooling, 66% or two-thirds are girls. This
means that approximately 81 million girls in this age-group are
not at school.
Almost 115 million children around the world don't go to school.
Poor kids often have to work to help their families survive.
Also, more girls than boys are out of school because parents
often think it's not important for them to learn.
The reasons poverty is more widespread among women than men are
complex. Women are likely to have had fewer educational
opportunities than men, as well as less health care and
nutrition. They usually face discrimination in the job market.
And in many places they have fewer legal rights than men, such
as the rights to own or inherit property.
