What is malnutrition?
This term covers a number of illnesses, each having its
direct cause in one or more nutriments (for instance
proteins, iodine or calcium) and characterized by a
imbalance in cell function – provision of nutrition and
energy on the one hand versus the growth needs of the
organism, its inner regulation and functionality.
Malnutrition causes death, mutilation and disability.
Malnutrition still exists in many forms in nearly every
country in the world, despite general improvement in
food distribution and standards of hygiene, and the
growing availability of education and social care.
In the developing world, 174 million children under 5
are considered malnourished, as shown by contrasting age
and weight, and about 230 million are considered to show
symptoms of delayed growth.
